Goodnight Moon

Ummm, yeah. That stuff about full moons having gravitationally magic, baby-extracting powers? Rubbish. All of it. But in all likelihood, Miles won’t be snuggled up in my belly TOO much longer. See, I went to visit my doc yesterday, and not only am I three centimeters dilated (not that that has any predictive value whatsoever, but it sounds sorta cool, yes?), but Doc actually suggested that he go ahead and strip my membranes (ugh – sounds so yuck) right then and there. I mean, my belly’s huge – beyond huge, whatever THAT is…colossally mammoth-sized? – and he knows that we make giant babies (ironic considering how Ryan and I ain’t exactly giant ourselves). And my Lily labor was pretty darn gruesome and excruciating, if you wanna know the truth. The kid got stuck. For hours.

And seeing as how I’ve put on four more pounds (so far) this pregnancy, and how boys tend to be bigger in general, well, Doc doesn’t recommend going over my due date by much. So while I vetoed the whole membrane stripping suggestion for yesterday – it seemed too soon and freaked me out a bit and totally caught me off-guard, honestly, and I had tons of googling to do before I could fully commit to such an act – I DID (sort of) agree to do it next Tuesday the eighteenth, one day past my due date. I’m still not sure I actually wanna go through with it. I’d much prefer that Miles come out when he’s good ‘n ready, as opposed to forcing (or, in the case of membrane stripping, strongly encouraging) the issue. But I’d also prefer not to birth a ten-pounder and be even more, er, messed up this time around. Because now I’ve also got a three-year-old to think about.

Decisions, decisions.

And so, Miles, it’d be reeeally helpful if you’d just decide to come out sometime in the next few days. This is your mother speaking, the one drinking the ICEE right this very moment. It’s yummy, yes? Get a move on, kid, and there’ll be lots more where this came from…ya know, after you’ve drank a bunch of milk and stuff for a while.

Lily and I have taken it pretty easy so far this week: a little park play, a couple trips to the gym, lots of errand running, and one day we hooked up with our pals Heidi and Nancy for a little Barnes & Noble fun. I didn’t bring an actual decent photo-taking device, so here’s a crappy, blurry iPhone pic of the girls being silly on stage. Miss Nancy’s to become a big sis only a couple little weeks after Lily, though her sibling will probably cooperate and join the outside world in a timely fashion, whereas Miles will most likely choose to hang in my womb for eternity. Sigh.

We also tried to do some productive stuff, like put Miles’s cool Rock ‘N Play Sleeper (we love it, Sara – thank you!) together. Miles’ll snooze in this cozy contraption in Ryan’s and my bedroom the first however-many months.
In the meantime, Lily’s been honing her big sister skills by rocking her babies to sleep.

Smooch.

Woooo!!!!! 3 centimeters?! That's so cool. So, let's talk about this. My doctor, stripped my membranes at 37 weeks. WITHOUT ASKING ME. She was up there "checking stuff" and did it, then said, "by the way, I stripped your membranes, you might have some contractions." What that WHAT!?!?!?!?!? I was SO super freaked out, and I rushed home and told Josh who then googled stuff which all said, if you do that you will go into labor within 48 hours!!! We were freaking. B/c 37 weeks is JUST full term. Ah! Anyways, his granddad, who used to deliver tons of babies back in the day said it's only effective if you are already about to deliver. He said like within 24-48 hours and it will just speed things up. Not necessarily induce labor, unless your already about to go into labor. If that makes any sense. And sure enough, each week she did it and nothing really happened except for cramping right after. But, she did it on my 39th week appointment, and the next day I had Addi. So who knows if it actually works. I will probably object next time. :)

Just so you know, baby brain never gets better. It's only been five years since I delivered the last minion but I have no idea what you're talking about. Then again, both my guys were C-sections.

I heard eating curry rice gets those babies moving out faster.

oh, and one more thing...

It has been suggested to me (okay, it was Ryan) that I change or clarify or otherwise DELETE what I wrote in my profile above – the part about how it sounds like our Lily was the spontaneous result of a completely unplanned conjoining of Ryan’s seed with my inebriated egg. I mean, yes, tequila was involved. I believe it was in margarita format. And, yes, there was one…and only one…night of unprotected sexy sex, along with some mildly embarrassing stuff that I could never, ever, ever go into because my mom reads this blog. But we wanted our Lily more than anything in the whole wide world. We just didn’t know it yet. That, and we’re Catholic, and Catholics make babies.

I’d make ten more just like you if I could, Lily. But no more tequila. It gives Mommy a headache and causes her to do silly things that make her blush the next day.
